Liverpool vs Atlético Madrid Prediction, Betting Tips & Preview – Champions League 9 September 2026

Introduction

Liverpool begin their 2026/27 Champions League campaign against Atlético Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday, 9 September 2026, with kick-off at 20:00 BST / 21:00 CET. UEFA and both clubs have confirmed the fixture as Matchday 1 of the league phase.

It is a difficult opening assignment for Andoni Iraola.

Liverpool have started their Premier League season with two consecutive 2-2 draws. They came from behind twice at Newcastle on opening weekend and repeated the same trick against Nottingham Forest at Anfield on 29 August. Four goals scored sounds healthy enough, but four conceded and no league victory from the opening two matches tell another part of the story.

Atlético arrive in much better results-based form.

Diego Simeone’s side have taken seven points from their opening three LaLiga matches, beating Málaga 2-0, drawing 2-2 with Villarreal despite finishing with ten men, and then producing an impressive 3-1 away victory against Sevilla.

That last performance was particularly convincing. Álex Baena scored twice and Ademola Lookman added another as Atlético raced into a 3-0 lead after only 33 minutes at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán.

Liverpool remain strong favourites at around 1.77, but this is not the sort of match where I would use the home price simply because someone is searching for sure odds Champions League today. Atlético are unbeaten domestically and have exactly the counterattacking tools required to test Liverpool’s aggressive new system.

I still favour Liverpool at Anfield, but goals look like the better starting point.

Team Form

Liverpool

Liverpool’s opening two league games have followed an almost identical pattern.

They have started too slowly, conceded first and then relied on attacking quality and character to recover.

At Newcastle, Anthony Elanga scored after only five minutes. Liverpool responded through Cody Gakpo before Joe Willock restored Newcastle’s lead. Dominik Szoboszlai eventually made it 2-2 from the penalty spot deep into stoppage time.

Against Nottingham Forest, the story repeated itself.

Dan Ndoye gave Forest a first-half lead before Alexander Isak equalised after 60 minutes. Morgan Gibbs-White then converted a penalty to make it 2-1, only for summer signing Victor Muñoz to score his first Liverpool goal in the 82nd minute and rescue another point.

Iraola himself has acknowledged that the team need to start games with more intensity. Liverpool’s attacking football is becoming clearer, but the press is not yet working consistently enough to protect the defence.

There is plenty of attacking quality.

Isak has already opened his account. Gakpo scored at Newcastle. Muñoz has immediately become a useful direct option, while Florian Wirtz, Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister give Liverpool several different ways to create from midfield.

The defence is the obvious concern.

Liverpool have allowed both Newcastle and Forest to establish leads, and they conceded again almost immediately after equalising against Forest.

That habit becomes dangerous against Atlético.

Simeone’s side may not need many opportunities. If Liverpool lose possession with their full-backs high, Atlético have the quality to attack the space immediately.

Liverpool still travel to Ipswich Town on Friday, 4 September before the Champions League opener, so their final form line could improve before Atlético arrive.

Atlético Madrid

Atlético’s start has been more stable.

They opened with a 2-0 win over Málaga, followed by the 2-2 draw against Villarreal. The Villarreal game became complicated after Robin Le Normand was sent off, but Giuliano Simeone scored a late equaliser to protect Atlético’s unbeaten start.

Then came the 3-1 win at Sevilla.

Baena opened the scoring after four minutes, Lookman made it 2-0 after 26, and Baena scored again seven minutes later. Atlético had effectively decided the match before half-time.

That performance also showed an interesting tactical development.

Atlético did not require a conventional centre-forward to dominate the first half. Baena operated intelligently in advanced areas, while Kang-in Lee, Pablo Barrios and Lookman supplied movement around him.

Simeone also has several significant summer additions.

Cristian Romero has joined from Tottenham and signed until 2031. Atlético have also added Alejandro Grimaldo from Bayer Leverkusen and Kang-in Lee from Paris Saint-Germain.

Those signings make this version of Atlético more comfortable in possession than some of Simeone’s older teams.

Grimaldo can create from the left.

Kang-in can play between lines or from either wing.

Romero gives the back line aggression and experience.

Atlético face Athletic Club at San Mamés on 5 September, four days before Anfield. That match should give us another useful indication of how strong their away form really is.

Tactical Analysis

This could be one of the most tactically interesting games of Matchday 1.

Liverpool want speed.

Atlético want control over when the game becomes fast.

Liverpool’s Press

Iraola is trying to bring a much more intense pressing structure to Liverpool.

The idea is simple: force the opposition into rushed passes, recover the ball quickly and attack before the defence resets.

The problem so far has been consistency.

Liverpool have had good spells in both league matches, but there have also been long periods when opponents have played through them too comfortably.

Atlético are well equipped to exploit that.

Kang-in, Barrios and Baena are technically secure enough to receive under pressure, while Grimaldo can provide another passing route on the left.

If Liverpool commit six players forward and Atlético escape that first press, the game can change direction extremely quickly.

Isak Against Atlético’s Centre-Backs

Alexander Isak should be central to Liverpool’s attack.

He scored against Forest and his movement is particularly useful against a defensive line containing strong, aggressive centre-backs.

Romero likes to step forward.

So does José María Giménez when he senses an opportunity to intercept.

Isak will try to use that aggression against them by dropping away from the penalty area and then attacking the space behind.

If he pulls one defender forward, Gakpo or Muñoz can make diagonal runs inside.

Atlético’s Left Side

Grimaldo can be one of Atlético’s main attacking weapons.

Liverpool’s right-back often pushes extremely high under Iraola. That gives the Reds another attacking player, but it also creates space behind him.

Simeone will almost certainly target that area.

A quick pass into Grimaldo or Lookman after a turnover could force Liverpool’s centre-backs to defend while running backwards.

That is where Atlético are at their most dangerous.

Baena Between the Lines

Baena’s performance at Sevilla was an important reminder that Atlético do not need to play through a traditional striker.

He scored twice while operating as a false nine and constantly moved away from the centre-backs.

That could cause problems for Liverpool’s defensive midfield.

If Virgil van Dijk or Jeremy Jacquet follows Baena into midfield, space appears behind.

If they stay deep, Baena can receive and turn.

Liverpool will probably ask Mac Allister or Gravenberch to deal with those movements rather than allowing a centre-back to break the defensive line.

Why Goals Appeal

Liverpool’s first two Premier League games have both finished 2-2.

Atlético have scored seven goals in three league matches, while their 2-2 draw against Villarreal showed they are not currently playing exclusively low-scoring football.

Early markets have Over 2.5 around 1.67 and BTTS Yes around 1.66.

That makes the Champions League over 2.5 goals prediction more interesting to me than trying to guess whether Liverpool’s transition period will prevent them from winning.

Head-to-Head

These clubs have developed a surprisingly entertaining Champions League rivalry.

UEFA records show:

Liverpool wins: 3
Draws: 2
Atlético Madrid wins: 2
Liverpool goals: 12
Atlético goals: 10

The most recent meeting came in last season’s Champions League league phase.

Liverpool 3-2 Atlético Madrid – September 2025

Liverpool won a five-goal match at Anfield, continuing a recent trend of entertaining meetings between the clubs.

The 2021/22 group stage also belonged to Liverpool:

Atlético Madrid 2-3 Liverpool

Liverpool won a chaotic match in Spain.

Liverpool 2-0 Atlético Madrid

The Reds then controlled the return fixture at Anfield.

But Atlético have also produced one of their most famous European away performances here.

Liverpool 2-3 Atlético Madrid – March 2020

Liverpool appeared to have overturned a first-leg deficit before Atlético scored three times in extra time and eliminated the holders from the Champions League.

That history matters because Simeone has already proved he can make Anfield uncomfortable.

Still, the broader record favours Liverpool, who have lost only two of the seven Champions League meetings.

Betting Markets

1X2: Liverpool to Win

The early market has:

  • Liverpool – 1.77
  • Draw – 3.85
  • Atlético Madrid – 4.40

Liverpool deserve to be favourites.

Anfield matters, and Iraola’s team have enough attacking talent to break down Atlético.

But 1.77 does not look especially generous when Liverpool are still waiting for their first league victory.

Lean: Liverpool to Win

Asian Handicap: Liverpool -0.5

Liverpool -0.5 is also around 1.77.

The more interesting lines are:

  • Liverpool -0.75 – around 1.95
  • Liverpool -1 – around 2.29
  • Atlético +1 – around 1.61

I would not use Liverpool -1 as the main selection.

Atlético have enough quality to keep this close, and a one-goal Liverpool victory is probably more realistic than a comfortable two- or three-goal result.

Pick: Liverpool AH -0.5

Over/Under 2.5 Goals

This is my favourite market.

Over 2.5 is approximately 1.67.

Under 2.5 is roughly 2.16.

The price reflects the changes in both teams.

Liverpool are playing much more directly under Iraola.

Atlético have looked considerably more adventurous with Baena, Lookman, Kang-in and Grimaldo providing creativity around the attack.

Pick: Over 2.5 Goals

Both Teams to Score

BTTS Yes is approximately 1.66, with No around 2.18.

I like Yes.

Liverpool have conceded twice in each league game.

Atlético have scored in all three LaLiga matches and produced three goals away at Sevilla.

At the other end, asking Atlético to keep Liverpool scoreless at Anfield feels unrealistic.

Pick: Goal/Goal-Yes

Liverpool to Win & BTTS

This is available around 3.20 in the early market.

That is an interesting higher-risk option because it matches my expected game script.

Liverpool should create the larger volume of opportunities.

Atlético should create enough in transition to score.

Higher-Risk Pick: Liverpool to Win & Goal/Goal-Yes

Best Bet

Over 2.5 Goals – Around 1.67

I prefer the goals market to Liverpool’s moneyline.

Liverpool are clearly capable of winning, but their first two league matches have shown that Iraola still has work to do defensively.

They have conceded four goals.

They have fallen behind four separate times.

They have also scored four and shown enough attacking quality to recover on each occasion.

Atlético are not arriving to protect a 0-0 draw at all costs.

They have scored seven goals in three LaLiga games, including three at Sevilla.

Baena is in excellent form.

Lookman gives them pace.

Kang-in adds creativity.

Grimaldo provides attacking quality from deeper positions.

The Champions League league-phase format also reduces the need for the kind of extreme first-leg caution we used to see in knockout football.

Both teams are looking for three points.

Best Bet: Over 2.5 Goals

Current Odds: Around 1.67

Alternative: Goal/Goal-Yes – around 1.66

1X2 Lean: Liverpool to Win

Asian Handicap: Liverpool AH -0.5

Higher-Risk Pick: Liverpool to Win & BTTS Yes

Score Prediction

Liverpool 2-1 Atlético Madrid

I expect Atlético to be much more competitive than the 4.40 away price suggests.

Simeone’s side are already playing with confidence.

They have not lost a competitive match.

Their new signings have increased the number of ways they can attack, and Baena’s form gives Liverpool another major problem to solve.

But Anfield remains the difference for me.

Liverpool have started poorly in both Premier League matches and still managed to recover.

At home in Europe, I expect the intensity to be much higher from the first whistle.

If Isak gets opportunities inside the penalty area, Liverpool should score.

The question is whether they can keep Atlético out.

So far, nothing in their league performances gives me enough confidence to predict a clean sheet.

Final Score Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Atlético Madrid

Conclusion

Liverpool are favourites, but this is not a straightforward home banker.

Their attacking football is starting to show signs of Iraola’s ideas, especially when the game becomes open.

The defensive side is still unfinished.

Two Premier League matches have produced two 2-2 draws, with Liverpool needing to come from behind twice in each game.

Atlético arrive in a very different position.

Seven points from nine.

Seven goals scored.

A convincing away victory at Sevilla.

And new players such as Romero, Grimaldo and Kang-in Lee have given Simeone more tactical variety.

That does not make Atlético my expected winners.

Anfield, Liverpool’s attacking depth and the presence of Isak, Wirtz, Gakpo and Szoboszlai still push the prediction towards the home side.

But the clearest angle is goals.

The current Champions League over 2.5 goals prediction at around 1.67 fits what both teams have shown so far much better than forcing an aggressive Liverpool handicap.

Atlético can score.

Liverpool should score.

And once the first goal arrives, I expect this match to become considerably more open.
